MARCH FOR LIFE 2012

I attended this year's March on the Burlington bus. Thanks to Theresa Gorey, Jane Finn, and everyone who helped with the organizing. We were also blessed by Father Andrew and Brother Felix of the FPO, as well as Father Tom ??? (Boston priest; I didn't get his last name).

The weather was damp and chilly, with a little rain mixed in. Lots of events around the March: about 2000 attended the Students for Life Convention. The Memorial Service for the Unborn, which included priest-in-exile Father Frank Pavone, was very powerful and moving. MCFL hosted a set of speakers in a senate office building prior to the March, who informed and prodded the assembled activists. Job #1: Defeat Obama!

How big was the March crowd? A contentious issue. Not nearly as big as many claim, unfortunately. I'm drawing on the empirical work of the late, great Bob Delery who, many years ago, stood on a street corner for at least one March, counting the marchers per row, the numbers of rows passing per minute, and the number of minutes between the beginning of the March and the last marchers. Multiplying the three numbers yielded about 40,000 that year -- well below organizers' estimates.

This year seemed about equal in size to last year and took about as long -- approximately 90 minutes to pass a given point along the route. So, my guess: 100,000.

From A PR point of view, it's only a modest success: ignored by most "news" organizations, and given scant coverage by others. And there are almost no spectators aside from police and other pro-lifers and a few street vendors. [Contrast with the many thousands who attend and cheer "gay pride" parades, to their own disgrace.]

But, of course, there is at least one other point of view -- the only one that really counts. God's. The March for Life honors God, the "God of the living, not of the dead." It proclaims a profound, if simple and obvious, truth about Life and its violations. Perhaps it is fitting that we march past nearly deserted sidewalks and mute buildings and monuments -- a metaphor of a dying civilization, deaf to Life.
